…So I had to take yesterday to just reflect and journal about my responses to Sylette DeBois’s workbook questions. Her presentation had me thinking a lot. Do I know what my real purpose is? What is my mission statement? My vision statement? Why do I do this work? And what about with my life… with my career it is one thing, but how do I want to experience my existence? Such thought-provoking questions…
…If you did not have a chance to tune in to Sylette’s workshop you can do a couple of things. You can just read along and get a feel for what we discussed or you can purchase the upgrade so you can get all of the Rejuvenation Collaboration recordings. I would think the second option is well worth it as it is really inexpensive!…
…So what are my reactions? What did I learn? How did I feel after hearing her talk… here we go. First off, I just wanted to highlight a few points that really struck me during her workshop. I loved how she opened it up- sharing that we all need to find our niche. This is true even for those not going into business for themselves. Even as a nurse, we have so many opportunities- there are so many roles and aspects of nursing you can do- so we have to find where we are happiest and where we best use our gifts. There are bedside nurses, one-on-one home care RNs, educators, administrators, legal RNs, consultants, etc… the list is endless!!…
…Sylette then led us through a 7 step exercise that would help you to discover and uncover your niche. What I loved the best was how she encouraged us to figure out what we are passionate about- what would we be willing to do as work… for free! Yes, for free!! If you are getting closer and closer to feeling as if you would do your job for no money… you are on to something! …
…The final point that Sylette shared that I found was so significant was that this is all a process. We cannot work on our mission statement or our life vision all in one day… We cannot expect that once we decide to make a change in our career things will happen over night. She shared that between intention, goal making, and goal achieval there is a process. It takes time. So we have to be patient and just trust that we are on our path. While we are working towards our goals and creating our vision we can just be happy with where we are at and everything else will fall into place with ease!…
…Ok, ok… so what did I learn? What were my reactions? How did I answer my journal questions? Here goes:
- What first attracted me to my career as a health care provider? Hmm… well, to be perfectly honest with you… it was sort of presented to me. I fell into it. I did not have a “calling” or want to be a RN since I was a child. I was graduating from the University of Delaware with a degree in psychology and had no idea what to do next. So since both of my roommates were in nursing school, the one girl’s mom was a nursing professor, and my mom was there on move in day- they all sort of got it in their heads that I would go through the UofD’s accelerated nursing program when I graduated… and that is just what I did! So, no glamorous answer for this one…
- Did I develop my career mission/vision statement? If so, what is it? You know what… I do have one. It is on my website under the Who page. I guess I could tweak this though to make it more conscice. I also want to edit it to include group programs, workshops, and speaking events so that I do not limit myself just by saying “coach” as if it is with one-on-one clients. So I will get to work on editing this. And if you do not see an updated one soon… you can call me out!
- What’s the one thing you will do to maintain your passion for work? I have to tell you- I loved Sylette’s encouragement to be happy where we are. To smile and be grateful for where we are at. I know that going forward… in whatever role I am in- I am going to take these words with me. I am going to experience everything with joy and gratitude. It goes along with what I was reading in my book today- life is a set amount of time. We only have limited space between when we are born and when we die. Why waste it feeling fear, anxiety, discontent, or judgment? Why not enjoy every single thing as it flows through and past us? That is what I will do to maintain my passion for work!
- How will you balance your dedication to work with your care for yourself? By keeping up with Living Sublime Wellness and partaking in Coach Scala’s monthly calls, of course!!… Haha, jk. I will commit to taking breaks. I will commit to not working on Sundays. I will commit to keeping up with my exercise and ensure I do some physical activity at least 3 days per week.

How about you? How can you answer these questions? Did you write your mission/vision statement? How can you maintain healthy balance between work and play?
